Diarrhea caused by a virus should resolve within a week. Initially, stool looks like water, then changes consistency to that of apple sauce, peanut butter, and then goes back to normal. The diarrheal illness may be accompanied by vomiting for 1-2 days.

The best treatment is to replenish fluids and give the digestive system a rest. Here is how:

    1. Give Pedialyte or Gatorade to replenish electrolytes lost with the diarrhea and through vomiting. Initially offer small sips, then gradually increase the amount of fluid given.

    2. Stay away from dairy and fatty and spicy foods as they will make symptoms worse.

    3. Peppermint Altoids or tea will soothe the stomach ache and nausea.

    4. Chamomile tea will lessen intestinal cramps.

    5. Foods to offer: toast, crackers, apple sauce, noodles, rice, cooked vegetables, chicken soup, dry Cheerios.

When symptoms start to improve, you can begin slow introduction of regular diet.

Whenever a child with diarrhea looks and acts very sick, seek medical attention right away.

    Best regards.
