Constipation, passing of hard stools or having a bowel movement 3 times a week or less, is never normal! First of all, it is uncomfortable. Second, it can cause health problems, such as bladder infections, acid reflux, or bad breath.

Constipation may be related to eating diet low in fiber and high in fat and carbs, or a disease process, such as hypothyroidism (slow thyroid).

You should suggest to your sister to talk with your nephew's regular health care provider about his constipation and recent weight gain as soon as possible.

    Best regards.
