Many parents want their children's ears to be pierced, even in infancy. They often ask whether they should or not do it during office visits. Here are my recommendations: wait until the child is at least 6 months old when her immune system is stronger, select a reputable place to have the piercing done at, and get 100% gold earrings to prevent allergic reactions to nickel. Also, consider the shape and size of the earrings. Kids are active, get into things, so small earrings that rest right on the earlobe will be safer. Dangling earrings, or rings, are a safety hazard.

  • I agree with Dr. Hillary.

I would also emphasize that although many children get their ears pierced at young ages, toddlers tend to put things in their mouth alot as they are exploring their environments at this age. In children younger then 4-5 years old, sometimes these earrings can come out and can be swallowed: they can be a choking hazard or can damage the esophagus. So if your child has a tendancy to put things in her mouth, be cautious that an earring doesn't go missing.
