A medical emergency can arise in a split second. When it comes to babies and young children, the likelihood for needing first aid rises based on youngsters’ undeveloped bodies, their natural curiosity and boundless energy.
Adults who get training specifically aimed at babies and children – up to age 12 – are empowered with essential lifesaving skills that protect the welfare of our vulnerable youngsters.
Basics for Treating a Choking Baby
The signs of choking are:
- Bluish skin color
- Inability to cry or make sounds
- Soft or pitched sounds while inhaling
Do not perform steps if baby is coughing. Coughing can dislodge the object on its own.
Baby choking steps:
1. Support baby’s neck
2. Position baby face down with head lower than his or her chest
3. Apply 5 back blows between the shoulder blades with one hand
4. Support neck and turn baby on back with head still lower than chest
5. Apply 5 chest thrusts, using 2-3 fingers and compress about 1” deep
6. Repeat Process until object is removed
